Cape Town Cycle Tour

With the 41st running of its world-famous cycling tour as its crescendo, the Cape Town Cycle Tour Lifecycle Week is a nine-day celebration of all things cycling, where a world-famous city embraces human power and celebrates the healthy lifestyle and freedom of movement the humble bicycle offers all its inhabitants and visitors. The Lifecycle Week kicks off with the MTB Challenge, held out in the Cape Winelands on the Saturday, and then the Junior cycling event on the Sunday. This future-star event is hosted in the Cape Town Stadium Precinct, in the shadow of Table Mountain, which is also the venue for the registration process each entrant must follow to collect their race number for Sunday’s main event, before taking in South Africa’s biggest cycling exhibition, the Cape Town Cycle Tour Expo. The first version of what is now called the Cape Town Cycle Tour (formally Cape Argus Cycle Tour) down the Cape Peninsula had 525 entrants. Year on year the number of participants grew and in 2016 there were over 35,000 enthusiastic cyclists taking part in what is now the largest individually timed cycle-tour in the world. The route, starting in Cape Town, takes you down 109 kms of incredible coastal roads along the Cape Peninsula, past quaint villages and bays as far as the entrance of the Cape Point Nature Reserve before returning to Cape Town. During the week leading up to the Cape Town Cycle Tour, we explore the delights of the Western Cape whilst warming up for the big event.
